Webinars offer expert advice

If you’ve ever needed advice on a congregational issue at odd hours, there are now at least three collections of archived webinars available for anyone to access.

These are mostly one-hour webinars that were created in the past several years, then archived. Most feature a UUA staff member or a congregational leader making a presentation, followed by a period of discussion including the people who participated in the live presentation of the webinar. Topics include nearly all aspects of congregational life––running board meetings, committees on ministry, digital-spiritual literacy, tips for new youth advisors, religious education curricula, volunteer practices, and more.

The UUA’s MidAmerica Region has an archive of webinars, as does the Central East Regional Group (CERG), and the UUA’s Vital Leaders blog, edited by the Rev. Renee Ruchotzke. Check the website of your own district or region, as well. Registration is required to view the CERG webinars.

In addition, there is a list of upcoming webinars on Growing Unitarian Universalism’s Facebook page. Click on the Webinars icon at the top of the page.

Archived webinars new source of information for leaders

Ever need advice on a congregational issue at 11 p.m.? Or 4 a.m.? Or on a weekend? That’s when the Central Midwest District’s archive of webinars on common issues that confront congregations can come in handy (as well as in the middle of the day).

These are webinars that were held in the past several years, then archived for posterity. Most feature a UUA staff member or lay leader making a presentation which is followed by a period of discussion including the people who participated in the live presentation of the webinar. Topics include: running board meetings, committees on ministry, digital-spiritual literacy, tips for new youth advisors, religious education curricula, volunteer practices, and much more. Around 30 presentations are in the archive.

The UUA’s Central East Regional Group (CERG) also has a collection of on-demand webinars. Check the website of your own district, as well. Registration is required to view the CERG webinars.

UPDATE 2.20.13 – There is a third collection of archived webinars on the UUA’s Vital Leaders blog edited by the Rev. Renee Ruchotzke. In addition, there is a list of upcoming webinars on Growing Unitarian Universalism’s Facebook page. Click on the Webinars icon at the top of the page.

Technology expands learning opportunities

From July’s InterConnections feature story, now online at UUA.org:

Technology is changing the way congregations acquire information. There was a time not so long ago when a congregation interested in learning how to do a better annual stewardship drive or develop its leadership might invite a consultant in for a day or a weekend.

That can still be the best way to go, but more and more—because our lives are busier and because the economy has shrunk our resources—congregations are gathering information through online “webinars” and other electronic learning formats.

Take the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Northern Nevada in Reno. When it wanted to update its mission and vision statements last winter it knew that an outside consultant would be helpful in that process. It also knew that its budget probably wouldn’t stand the strain of bringing one in for a face-to-face workshop.
